Welcome to Above the Fray: Traditional Hilltribe Art
| The hilltribe artisans Above the Fray represent on this site and at our "Sale of Silk" Events come from dozens of ethnic groups, including the Tai Daeng, Katu, Khamu, H'mong, Dzao, Sedang and others, who live in the mountainous jungles of Laos and Vietnam. Each artist's vision embodies a timeless folklore that blends the rituals of daily life with animism, ancestor worship, and Buddhism, and renders an exquisite and profound art.
Despite the 20th Century challenges of colonialism, war and poverty, the hilltribe peoples' millennium-old traditions of symbolic weaving and other village arts continue to flourish. We are particularly pleased to represent the sophisticated and intricate silk ceremonial blankets and shaman and healing shawls of the Tai Daeng people. Gallery items, both new and used, are attentively selected by Above the Fray directly from the individual artist or in local village and town markets, and each is carefully chosen for quality, precision, color-play and charm. All textiles are hand-woven and naturally-dyed. A photo of the artist with each one-of-a-kind piece is often available. Our on-line gallery represents only a small sample of our diverse collection of textiles and other hilltribe art, and we encourage you to contact us if you are looking for a certain artifact, design, style or color.
